Innovative environmentally friendly products
Almost all industrial sectors in the member states of the European Union are encouraged to limit the negative impact on the environment and to implement pro-ecological activities. Taking into account the mass production scale of large enterprises, such actions can almost immediately bring measurable positive effects.The road construction industry is no exception and also has great potential to implement this type of activity. On 1 August 2015, the Polish company FLUKAR Sp. z o. o. began work as part of a large project entitled “Pro-ecological pilot installation for the production of asphalt emulsions modified with nanostructures from waste polymers” (LIFE EMU NEW). The project received funding from the European Commission and the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management under the LIFE program, which is the only EU financial instrument devoted exclusively to co-financing projects in the field of environmental and climate protection.
The main goal of the project is to demonstrate innovative technology that allows obtaining asphalt emulsions modified with nanostructures from waste polymers. This product will have better durability and bonding parameters compared to those currently used in road construction. This goal will be achieved by constructing a pilot installation that will enable scalability to be achieved in reference to an industrial scale. The innovative technical solutions that are being implemented assume the interoperability of four technological nodes: a modified asphalt production node, a nanofiber production node, a liquefaction and waste polymer treatment and modification node, and an emulsion production node. The pro-ecological value of the project is evidenced by the fact that large-scale waste polymers are used for the production of asphalt binder modifiers and the production of nanofibers, which will constitute an additional, innovative way to improve the properties of asphalt emulsions. The introduction of polymer nanofibers to the final stage of asphalt emulsion production should contribute to a visible increase in low-temperature resistance, which is one of the main reasons for detaching the main layers of road pavement, and to improve mechanical and elastic properties.
At the same time, FLUKAR implements projects, the investment part of which includes built-up installations for the regeneration of used oils, solvents and other petroleum waste.The use of innovative solutions will allow to obtain products that can return to the economy.Implemented in this way, the idea of sustainable development and the circular economy puts the Polish company at the forefront of companies that include ecological solutions in development policy.
